Stories behind some of my songs
Brian's Song
When I was a Freshman at WVU a friend of mine went through a rough time. She lived two floors below me and she was still dating her high school sweetheart. Brian went to a party one night at the frat house he was pledging. There was suppose to be no drinking allowed for the pledges but you know how well those rules get followed. The pledge brothers were drinking on the roof on the frat house and although I wasn't up there with him here is how the story was told. There was a box of wine that began to slide off the roof and when Brian went to grab it he fell off. Brian went into a two week coma after the accident while suffering other injuries from the fall. You can imagine what type of heartache this brought to Melissa. During the time of Brian's coma I wrote a song. The day after I played it for Melissa he woke up. This song will always be one of my favorite stories to sing.
Angel of Destiny
It is amazing how much one person can teach you in such a short period of time. I decided to become infatuated with a woman that was so out of my league it makes me laugh when I think back to that summer. I had just ended a relationship and I was introduced to an entirely new group of people that I partied with for an entire summer. Kelly was about 10 years older than me. She was sexy and wild. She tortured me with flirtatious comments and I hung on every word she uttered that summer. She was unhappily married and she had a mutual friend staying at her house with her and her husband. She was obsessed with angels and she taught me about them whenever we were alone. She gave me a book that talked about the various types of angels. There is an angel of water and an angel of fire and each of these angels are given a name. The one she loved the most was Manu. Manu is the Angel of Destiny. While Clubby was staying with Kelly and her husband they fell in love. He saved her from a horrible marriage. Clubby then became Kelly's Manu. I love the idea of Angels watching over us and I know I feel them sometimes. This song brings out more emotion in me than anything I have ever written.
It was you
This song tells the story by itself. I just used to tell people it was about boy before I had the balls to say it was really about girl. The first love always leaves the biggest scar.
Standing Still
I guess you could say that this is one of my angry songs. I wrote it while I was trying to get out of the restaurant industry and I was interviewing for jobs in corporate America. It was frustrating to be judged and analyzed while I already felt like I was stuck. Sometimes in life you feel like you aren't growing or moving forward. Writing this song helped me cope with the fact that I wasn't satisfied with standing still.
Goodbye
Only my close friends will ever know the story behind the graduation song.
Mistress
A quick reality check. When I was younger I wrote about love. When I got a little older I found out that marriage doesn't always equal love and there are other things going on in the world besides puppy love.
Lie to me
I wrote this song while I was out falling out of love with someone. I wrote exactly what I thought she was thinking. Sometimes you know what the other person is doing but you would rather have them lie to you. It is much more real once they have said it out loud.
